"Always cared about others"

Barbara Leppe Scholarship

Barbara Pearson was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She graduated from the University of Oregon with degrees in interior design and speech therapy. In 1948 she married her high school sweetheart, Bill Healy, and in 1950 they moved to Bend where they had four children; Chris, Cameron, Tom and Mark. Barbara provided an important role to her husband as he developed the Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort which opened in 1958.

"Bobby" as she was affectionately known, was a woman with a reputation for having an independent spirit who cared deeply about young women who struggled in life. She volunteered her time and gave her personal resources to help them forge a better path. When she passed away in 2006, her family and friends contributed to a Scholarship Fund in her memory which focused on education offered through Central Oregon Community College. In 2008 The Bill Healy Foundation established a permanent endowment of $20,000 to be awarded annually (4-$5,000 scholarships). In 2013 the scholarship was increased to 6 recipients.

The foundation receives applications through the "Beat the Odds" program sponsored by the Oregon non-profit Stand for Children and considers young women candidates from rural Oregon communities.

The scholarship criteria are contingent upon acceptance to a two or four-year institution.  Funds are divided equally over the fall, winter, and spring terms (or fall and spring if the school runs on semesters) and are disbursed at the beginning of each term directly to the school.

Recipients are required to enroll for and complete at least twelve credit hours (or nine if your school runs on semesters) each term, remain in good academic standing and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. An annual one page narrative of the college experience is required for Board review and if all criteria is successfully met, the scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years with a potential of $20,000.
