Manini Beach

Manini Beach

The Bill Healy Foundation is committed to responsible and thoughtful grant giving in the State of Oregon and the State of Hawaii. We focus on Environmental Conservation and The Well Being of Children.

Since 2000 the foundation has supported a wide variety of projects. Our largest stewardship project to date is Manini Beach in Hawaii. The following is the Manini Beach story along with a list of all grant recipients to date.

Stewardship Project: Environment and Children

Hawaii - Kapahukapu - Manini Beach

One of the most enduring and long term efforts of the foundation is the acquisition of a 29 year lease on 3/4 acre of beach property from the Kamehameha Schools Foundation in 2001. Currently known as Manini Beach, Kapuhukapu, was used as an ancient site of healing for over a century. It is located on the south shore of Kealakakua Bay in South Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii. The bay has been designated as a National Marine Reserve and is one of the first sites Europeans made contact with native Hawaiians.

Our challenge was to restore the site to a condition that was safe and inviting. The property was littered with old tires, car parts, trash and debris and was overgrown with a variety of invasive weeds. The foundation now provides full time local Hawaiian resident caretakers, landscape maintenance and bathroom facilities. We have installed permanent picnic benches, a gate to restrict motor motor vehicles on the beach and signage to insure safety. The annual Clean Up Day and Picnic is well attened and supported by the local residents.

The foundation is committed to provide an environment of respect and appreciation for the history, beauty, environmental value and the Ohaha Hawaiian tranditions of the site. It is a place that brings culture, tourists, children, local families and community together. We continue to work with Kamehameha Schools and Hawaiian Immersion School to develop future programs to include educational and science based field trips to Manini Beach.

Barbara Leppe

1925 - 2006

"Always cared about others"

Barbara Leppe Scholarship Fund

Barbara Pearson was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She graduated from the Univesity of Oregon with degrees in interior design and speech therapy. In 1948 she married her high school sweetheat, Bill Healy, and in 1950 they moved to Bend where they had four children; Chris, Cameron, Tom and Mark. Barbara provided an important role to her husband as he developed the Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort which opened in 1958.

"Bobby" as she was affectionately known, was a women with a reputation for having an independent spirit who cared deeply about young women who struggled in life. She volunteered her time and gave her personal resources to help them forge a better path. When she passed away in 2006, her family and friends contributed to a Scholarship Fund in her memory which focused on education offered through Central Oregon Community College. In 2008 The Bill Healy Foundaiton established a permanent endowment of $20,000 to be awarded annually (4- $5,000 scholarships). The Barbara Leppe Scholarship Fund now provides an opportunity for four rural Oregon young women to pursue higher education. Each has an opportunity to reapply, and if they meet the criteria, is eligible for support for a four year educational scholarship.

Barbara Leppe Scholarship Fund Process

The foundation receives applications through the "Beat the Odds" program sponsored by the Oregon non-profit Stand for Children and considers young women candidates from rural Oregon communities.
