

A component of the Janus Youth Programs 6,800 square foot organic garden project is The Food Works program which employs 12 teens. Comprised of East African refugees, South Pacific Islanders and local teens who provide all the labor crucial to elderly and disabled residents. They serve as mentors for younger children, distribute food to homebound residents located in North Portland at St. John's Woods, a public housing project. The teens launched an entrepreneurial business - growing and selling specialty organic salad greens and herbs at Saturday Market. Our grant provided stipends, installation of a drip-irrigation water system, the purchase of garden materials, bus passes and academic supplies for mentoring activities.
